Serpenthes is the work of self-taught Los Angeles native Gabriela Ruiz. Her creations have been given a wide range of compliments – from being described as whimsical and adorable to receiving reports of disturbing the peace. She describes her work as things you’d probably see right before the end of the world, when everything is not quite right. Or perhaps the result of eating too many gummi worms.
She draws inspiration from some of her favorite things: classic horror films, natural history museums, medieval woodcut illustrations, children’s literature, classic cars, bunnies, catholic iconography, insect exoskeletons, sweet wolves, beaches at night, crazy carnies that go by Mr. Waits, & lion whispering.
Her unique illustrations have been featured at several boutiques and graces walls from Los Angeles City Hall to the offices of worker bees. Current projects include a Day of the Dead pin-up calendar, an ongoing holiday card series, and a children’s book scheduled to release late in 2013.
She resides in Hollywood with a best friend, a very small T. Rex, a French pirate, a British bear and a skeleton with a hat addiction.
